The Power of Information
Many technological intervention opportunities exist to make information accessible for vulnerable populations.
💖 This Week's Byte
For vulnerable people, having access to a certain type of information can be life-saving/changing. As technologists, we can provide a lot of assistance, and the intervention can be as simple as building a website. Not all information is equally useful and accurate, though.
📊 Did You Know?
UNESCO reported that 56% of internet users frequently use social media to stay informed about current events. What can we do for the remaining 44%? Is there anything the 56% “informed” users should be aware of?
📖 Information is Power
Refugees urgently need information when they are forcibly displaced from their homes. We can develop a digital platform that aggregates useful information for the targeted audiences. The dissemination process can also be optimized by incorporating digital accessibility practices.
Valuable insights are generated every second in the field. This can be what social workers have captured in the child protection context, for example. Recording original events on time and managing them efficiently enables us to amplify the impact of meaningful work through enhanced productivity.
Building digital platforms and chatbots can be a low-hanging fruit to distribute critical information to remote, vulnerable populations. In the digital era, many have access to basic mobile devices, and hence, time-sensitive, life-saving information for maternal and mental health is delivered efficiently.
More information isn’t always better. There is an increased risk of dis- and misinformation, which must be urgently addressed through literacy education and stakeholder coordination.
