Digital Information Helps Refugee Resettlement

Digital platforms and AI algorithms empower refugees by delivering necessary information when they move to a new country.

💖 This week's byte: Resettling refugees in their host communities can be supported by digital platforms and AI algorithms. These technologies help deliver the right information to the right people at the right time, empowering vulnerable populations to work around many obstacles they encounter.

📊 Did You Know?

UNHCR reported that “over 122.6 million people are forcibly displaced globally” as of the end of June 2024, including refugees, and the number has been increasing for a decade. Resettling these migrants is an urgent yet complex task for host communities. European Commission’s 2016 article, for example, estimates that “it takes refugees up to 20 years to have a similar employment rate as the native-born.”

📖 This Week’s Story

Who, When, and Where — Context

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) has recognized refugee resettlement as a big issue among host communities globally.

Why — Challenge

More than a hundred million people are displaced from their homes globally, and even if they find an alternative place to live, a different culture, language, and environment make the resettlement process extremely difficult. Here, achieving economic independence through the right job opportunities is a crucial milestone for refugees and host communities. However, there has been a noticeable gap in employment rates between native-borns and others.

What and How — Tech Solution

Led by the IRC, a digital platform called Signpost has been developed. The platform, together with community supporters and industry partners, enables migrants to easily get basic information when they arrive in a new country. Signpost has been implemented in dozens of countries and reached over a million people globally since 2015. Meanwhile, to fill the gap in employment rates, the IRC has been collaborating with Stanford University to explore the use of AI algorithms that help refugees find jobs.

💡 Key Insights

  • 📈 Life-long support is required for vulnerable populations like refugees, from entering a new country to achieving economic independence. Moving them from one high-risk area to another is not the end of the mission.

  • 📚️ Information is power, especially for the socio-economically vulnerable. Reading, writing, searching, and analyzing—the set of modern literacy—is not something everyone can equally enjoy.

  • 💬 AI algorithms help us receive personalized support to make informed decisions. This is particularly beneficial for refugees with unique and complex backgrounds in their host communities.
