Right to Internet Access
Over 2.5 billion people still aren’t online, and even tech-forward regions struggle with full coverage.
💖 This Week's Byte
Over 2.5 billion people still aren’t online, and even tech-forward regions struggle with full coverage. So, how did countries like Kosovo and Morocco leap ahead in digital access? Strong government leadership, public-private teamwork, and rural-centred, tailored solutions are the keys.
📊 Did You Know?
DataReportal’s “Digital Around the World” report highlights that, despite many improvements in global internet access, 2.58 billion people (~30% of the worldwide population) remain “unconnected” to the internet today. The majority of these people reside in Southern and Eastern Asia, as well as Africa.
📖 Investment in Digital Infrastructure
Internet penetration is a global challenge. Even in Europe, achieving universal access to the internet is ambitious, as Kosovo has faced. This is largely due to poor infrastructure, limited literacy, and difficulties in public-private coordination, especially in rural areas.
The problem is multifaceted. Thus, making foundational change in infrastructure needs a diversified approach with strong government leadership. In Africa, Morocco has made a significant achievement with an impressive online penetration rate of 92.2%.
The internet is material. Although governments, companies, and people in the field play a pivotal role in penetration, we cannot imagine the future without robust, resilient submarine cable systems.
Why low-tech solutions still work the best? It is simply because the necessary infrastructure is readily available in various contexts. The wider today’s state-of-the-art tech penetrates, the more possibilities people become able to envision.
