Who, When, and Where — Context

In 2022, CAHAYA BUDI LUHUR (or “Noble Light”), a group of IEEE Members from the Indonesia Section, was funded for its renewable energy project.

Why — Challenge

An organization in Indonesia called YPAC (the Foundation for the Care of Disabled Children) provides shelter and nurture for children with disabilities. Their operations rely heavily on financial support from other companies, and they were negatively affected by a decline in corporate donations after the COVID-19 pandemic. Consequently, their Disabled Children Care Home in Jakarta urgently needed to reduce overhead expenses for a more efficient resource allocation.

What and How — Tech Solution

The CAHAYA BUDI LUHUR team provided an on-grid rooftop photovoltaic power plant to the children’s home. By the end of the project, the power plant helped the YPAC Foundation save electricity by 17%. If the project had not run during the rainy season with a larger and more frequent cloud coverage, the power plant could have saved as much as 25% of the electricity use. Furthermore, the installation of the rooftop power generation unit at the care home unlocked an opportunity for persons with disabilities to become leaders in renewable energy campaigns.
