đź’– This week's byte: AI-assisted education scales up the content development and delivery process in crisis-affected settings, where human and material resources are scarce.

đź“– The Story

Who, When, and Where — Context

Since the project began in 2023, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) has reached teachers and caregivers in protracted and acute crises in areas such as Northeast Nigeria, Colombia, and Bangladesh.

Why — Challenge

Hundreds of millions of children are affected by global crises, and many suffer from inequality, poverty, and instability. These barriers force children out of school, and even if they can attend school, there are not enough teachers, making learning nearly impossible.

What and How — Tech Solution

To support teachers and parents, the IRC has developed an AI-driven educational chatbot platform called aprendIA, leveraging OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Thanks to the generative AI capability, the IRC became able to rapidly create content, deliver personalized learning experiences, and empower the limited capacity of teachers and parents. Since children’s learning environments are not always stable in humanitarian contexts, the solution is designed to deliver educational resources at low cost on simple messaging platforms such as SMS and WhatsApp.

đź’ˇ Key Insights

  • 🎯 Tacking a bottleneck is the common practice to effectively address a big issue at scale. For education in crisis-affected communities, it is the extremely scarce, limited capacity of learning facilitators like teachers and caregivers.

  • 🏫 The rise of AI power shows enormous potential in Ed-Tech, especially when developing content at scale and personalizing programs for numerous learners who are in different situations.

  • 📵 We cannot assume 24/7 access to the internet, computer, or classroom when we talk about people in need. Technical solutions must consider the unique constraints for better context adaptation.

âś… Try This

Ask ChatGPT or any AI tools “Generate educational content for XXX [topic of your interest].” Would the AI response bootstrap an onboarding process if you were to teach someone about the topic?

đź“Š Did You Know?

In UNESCO’s late 2023 figures, 250 million children are missing out on schooling. In combination with the economic implications of the student-teacher ratio, the statistics led their global report for teachers reveal an urgent need for 44 million primary and secondary teachers worldwide by 2030.

đź’ Share your thoughts: If you are a teacher and your students are learning from home only on their smartphone (no tablet, no computer, no physical textbooks) under unstable internet connectivity and power supply, what would be the major considerations for you to effectively and efficiently deliver educational content you remotely developed?
